STAR WARS Zero Company Permadeath Toggle Explained
Permadeath is enabled by default in STAR WARS Zero Company, but it can be toggled off. This makes it a campaign setting rather than an unavoidable rule for every player.

Is permadeath forced?
No. The launch FAQ says it is enabled by default and can be toggled off if desired. Check the campaign or difficulty settings before the first operation so the default does not make the choice for you by surprise.
What to consider before leaving it on
Permadeath changes the value of cover, retreating, reloading and accepting a risky objective. A failed mission is not the only cost: losing a squad member can change the roster and bond plan for the rest of the campaign. Treat every new mission as a question of extraction as well as victory.
A sensible first-run choice
Keep the default only if you want the loss-and-recovery pressure the team describes. Turn it off if you are learning the systems, testing classes or trying to see the story without restarting around a casualty. The injuries and permadeath guide and difficulty guide cover the surrounding settings.
